The Function of Vision
Over the last four decades, the previously distinct approaches of biology, psychology and artificial intelligence to visual perception have been integrated to establish the new field of vision science. This talk will sketch the history of vision science, and describe some of the important advances that it has achieved. One of these is our growing understanding that visual perception is not unitary, but involves multiple processes with different functions. Examples of basic and applied research on functions of vision will be described, ranging from the perception of visual textures to the control of bird flight.
