Memorial tree planting ceremony and reception
Friday, January 22, 2010

A ceremonial tree planting and reception will take place on Friday 22 January at the Edinburgh Campus to commemorate Sir William Gibson-Craig. This year the University celebrates the 40th anniversary of the creation of our Edinburgh Campus on the former Riccarton Estate of Sir William Gibson-Craig. Sir William Gibson-Craig was a keen gardener who introduced many exotic specimen trees that still grace the University campus today.
The tree planting is also one of a series of events to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society and recognises Sir William Gibson-Craig's achievement in safeguarding the Society's experimental garden as part of the Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh. The tree to be planted in Sir William’s honour, an Australian Wollemii Nobilis, is one of the most exciting tree species to be discovered in the 20th century, reflecting the dedication of Sir William and his Victorian contemporaries in funding intrepid botanical expeditions all over the world.
The event will begin at 9.45am with the tree planting ceremony. Following this a short historical presentation will take place in our prestigious Edinburgh Business School. You will also have the opportunity to visit the University’s Museum and Archive. The event is expected to finish at 11.50am.
If you would like to attend this event then please note the meeting point will be outside the James Watt Centre at 9.45am.
