Lunchtime Seminar: Research-Teaching links
Friday, April 9, 2010

This Lunchtime Seminar, Research-Teaching links - facilitating an interaction which helps undergraduates learn what research is like, and postgraduates to communicate their work at a basic level, will be presented by Prof. Roger Downie of theUniversity of Glasgow.
Governments, funding councils et al. agonise about what added value there is to undergraduate learning from working in a research environment. The obvious answer is through final year projects and the up-dating of lectures by teachers working at the cutting edge of research. But can we do more than this? This talk will describe a research-teaching interaction that brings young researchers together with small groups of level 1 and 2 undergraduates. The undergraduates need to learn what the researcher’s work is about, and what it’s like to lead the life of a researcher, in order to devise a set of outputs. The researchers need to be able to communicate their work to students who are at a foundation level in their subject. There are benefits to both sides in this interaction.
Buffet lunch will be provided.
