James Ferguson: Wheelwright of the heavens

Heriot-Watt University Honorary Professor, Roland Paxton will present a lecture on the life and times of the esteemed philosopher and scientist, James Ferguson.
Known as the ‘wheelwright of the heavens’ Ferguson was one of the first people to explain Sir Isaac Newton’s ideas in popular terms. His successful lectures on subjects such as Mechanics, Hydrostatics, Pneumatics and Optics, along with his other extraordinary achievements led to him receiving a pension from King George III and in 1763, Fellowship of the Royal Society.
