Former Heriot-Watt PhD student wins the Roy Prize

A former PhD student at Heriot-Watt has won a prize for his PhD thesis.

The Condensed Matter and Materials Division of the Institute of Physics has awarded Tim Munt the Roy Prize for the best PhD thesis in Condensed Matter/Materials Physics in the last academic year.

Tim graduated from the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences in July 2006. His PhD, entitled "Modelling the Evolution and Stability of Quantum Dot Arrays", was supported by a studentship from the EPSRC and was supervised by Professor David Jesson, and latterly by Professor Alan Greenaway and Dr.Eitan Abraham of the Physics section of the School, during the final stages of his PhD.

The prize of £500 will be awarded to Tim at the Condensed Matter and Materials Physics conference CMMP 2007 in Leicester in April.

Commenting on this prize, Tim said: "I greatly enjoyed my PhD research at Heriot-Watt and was delighted to hear the news that my thesis has won this prize. I am very grateful for all the help and support I received while at Heriot-Watt and look forward to presenting my work and receiving the prize at the CMMP 2007 conference."

Professor Alan Greenaway from the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences said: "This accolade reflects great credit on Tim and all our congratulations to him on this achievement.”
