Heriot-Watt researchers in finals of THALES Scottish Technology Prize

Three leading laser researchers from Heriot-Watt's School of Engineering and Physical Sciences have been announced as finalists in the 2008 THALES Scottish Technology Prize.

Dr Robert Thomson, Professor Derryck Reid and Professor Gerald Buller submitted project proposals on laser related topics relevant to THALES product lines. The competition attracted over 35 applications from Scottish universities.

Funded by THALES and supported by Scottish Enterprise, the competition is open to all Scottish Universities, promoting collaboration, product innovation and knowledge transfer in laser technology and its applications. THALES manufactures and designs laser range-finders, target designators and sighting systems for soldiers and armoured fighting vehicles.

This year's competition launch was hosted by Heriot-Watt's Technology and Research Services (TRS) where senior THALES staff presented their vision for the competition. A number of prizes will be awarded to those entries, which, in the opinion of the judges, best combine relevance to THALES business, innovation, technical quality and potential for rapid transition into a product.

The final will take place in Glasgow on 11 December
