Alumni Fund Grants Awarded

Following a successful year of fundraising for the Alumni Fund, including two telethons, the Alumni Fund Committee met recently to consider applications for awards. We are delighted to report back to you that a broad range of successful applications were awarded grants. These include:

Access Bursaries

The Committee was delighted to be able to increase its support for the Access Bursary scheme following last year’s grant which established the programme. The bursaries are awarded to enable applicants of the very highest calibre and ability to study at Heriot-Watt, who may otherwise have been prevented due to difficult financial circumstances.

Drama Society

Following last year’s hugely successful panto ‘Treasure Island’, the Drama Society has been granted an award to support this year’s production of ‘Cinderella’ which promises to be bigger and better!

First Aid Africa

Last year a small group of Heriot-Watt students took part in the First Aid Africa project, teaching vital, life-saving skills to students in Tanzania. Since then, the project has grown and developed. A grant from the Alumni Fund is supporting ten students this year, who will be taking part in the programme in the summer.

Che Camille

A grant has been awarded to the School of Textiles in Galashiels to establish a residency for a newly graduated Heriot-Watt student at the Glasgow shop Che Camille. Che Camille is building a reputation as home to some of the best fledgling fashion design talent in Scotland. A young designer from Heriot-Watt will share a creative studio space and the individual collections produced are sold in the adjoining boutique.

Marine Research and Protection

Four students have been awarded travel grants to conduct important research into marine wildlife maintenance and protection, including the effects of climate change and studying sea turtles in Panama.

Attendance at Conferences

Several students have applied for and been awarded travel grants to attend professional and academic conferences which will afford opportunities for them to deliver papers and showcase their research.
