Edinburgh Lecture - Tickets available

World renowned Scottish Judo expert and holder of a tenth Dan, Dr George Kerr CBE will give this year's Edinburgh Lecture entitled: 'Breaking boundaries in sport.'

Dr Kerr is one of only six living people in the world today to hold a tenth Dan in judo. There is no higher honour in the sport, and almost all the holders are in Japan.

A former British and European champion, Olympic referee and chairman of British Judo (he is currently its president), George, who was awarded an Honorary Degree from Heriot-Watt is also the only coach in Britain to have trained a double Olympic champion.

His lecture, will tell his story from humble beginnings to the top of his sport.

This year's lecture series celebrates those who have achieved the extraordinary in their own field and is the twentieth year of the series.

Entitled ‘Extraordinary Feats, Extraordinary People’, the series will feature thought-provoking and illuminating talks, during a year in which many in the sporting world will attempt to push the boundaries of human endeavour.

This anniversary programme will run from February to June and will present a variety of subjects, from the achievements of women in the field of astronomy, or being woken from a coma to be told your hands and feet have been amputated, to dispelling the myths that forensic anthropology is solely focused on identifying bones.

The Lectures are led by the City of Edinburgh Council and presented in partnership with The University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh Napier University, The Open University in Scotland, National Museums of Scotland, Creative Scotland, The Scottish Government, The Royal Society of Edinburgh and Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh.

Dr Kerr's lecture will take place on 28th March at 7.00pm in the Cairn Auditorium of the Postgraduate Centre at the Edinburgh Campus.
