Notice of Election for Dean of the University

Professor John Sawkins is to be appointed as Deputy Principal (Learning and Teaching) and will be stepping down from the office of Dean of the University in the near future.

In accordance with Ordinance 12: Deans of the University and Associate Deans, an election for a new Dean will take place in April 2012 and members of staff are invited to submit nominations.

The discipline and subject area of any member of staff submitting a nomination should be in arts, humanities or social sciences. Although Ordinance 12 states that a Dean shall normally be elected from the members of the full-time professorial staff of the University, nominations from all staff in the categories listed above with relevant experience are encouraged.

The elected Dean shall hold office for the unexpired portion of Professor Sawkins’ period of office which will expire on 30 September 2013, and shall be eligible to stand for re-election for a period of three years in the first instance.

A description of the duties of the Deans is available on the website detailed below.
Professor J D C Jones, Vice-Principal or either of the two current Deans – Professor P John and Professor Sawkins, may be contacted for further information on the role of a Dean.

Nominations should be submitted on the Nomination Form, which should bear the details of the candidate and the signatures of at least two electors and the candidate. The candidate should include with the Nomination Form a short statement on suitability for the office of Dean (200 words maximum).

Nomination Forms should be submitted to Stewart Smith, Head of Senate Services, by 9 March 2012. The Senate Business Committee will consider the suitability of nominations in the first instance. If more than one suitable nomination is received then an election will take place in April. All staff in the categories listed above are eligible to nominate a candidate and to vote in an election, irrespective of their discipline or subject area.
